New Silk Roads: Painting Beyond Borders, features fine modern and contemporary paintings from the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in a major show centering upon the region’s artists.
The exhibition’s main theme revisits a familiar idea – that of the Silk Road or roads – the great network of overland and maritime highways connecting East Asia, through Central Asia, to Europe, since circa 3rd century BC. At key points in world history it has conducted trade, culture, ideas, religions, diplomats, spies, armies and explorers across and around the Eurasian landmass. While building on the notion of the roads as conduits for exchange, the exhibition will however lend a fresh perspective, given the relatively limited exposure which Central Asian artists have had internationally.
