10 Years // 11 Stories: artcommune Anniversary Celebration

Cheong Soo Pieng, Untitled (Making Up), Undated, Oil on canvas, 92 x 120 cm

Featuring the Collections of S. Ahmed | The Bok Family | Chan Tan Fong | Wesley & Diane D’Aranjo | Fermin Diez & Su-Yen Wong | Joshua & Sophia Lim | Melvin Poh | Tan Kuan Ern & Ho Su Mei | The STArk Collection / Rajesh A Vasadani | & Two Other Private Collectors

artcommune celebrates the first ten years since its founding with an anniversary exhibition. Held at Artspace @ Helutrans, the exhibition will run from 6 – 13 October 2019, with an official opening on Saturday, 5 October 2019, from 3pm – 7pm. To celebrate this milestone, the gallery has taken an unprecedented step in its curation by inviting 11 esteemed collectors to curate and share their art collecting journey and philosophy, thereby illuminating the gallery’s vision of introducing the best of Singapore’s visual art canon to audiences locally and abroad since artcommune first opened its doors at a modest unit at Chinatown Point in October 2009.

On special view are over 100 artworks independently selected by 11 collectors who have unreservedly responded to this project with enthusiasm, having witnessed artcommune growing from strength to strength and sharing the same fervent belief and passion for Singapore art. Each collector was set on a passage of reflection and was tasked to put together a curated showcase representative of his collection. Just as artists and galleries evolve, so do collectors. As this 10th anniversary project aims to put the spotlight on collectors and their art collecting journeys, it is vital to show the diverse range of art that Singapore collectors love and follow. Hence, the works selected for discussion were not restricted to Singapore art or artworks purchased from the gallery. Highlights on display include: a series of Cheong Soo Pieng’s figurative paintings in oil, mixed media, and ceramic; 2 paintings by Chua Ek Kay from the Vivaldi series; artworks by local artists the likes of Chen Wen Hsi, Chua Mia Tee, Ho Ho Ying, Hong Sek Chern, Lai Foong Moi, Jane Lee, Lim Tze Peng, Liu Kang, Ong Kim Seng, Anthony Poon, Tan Choh Tee, Tay Bak Chiang, Tong Chin Sye, Wong Keen, Yeo Hoe Koon and many more, with some surprising overseas works by Yayoi Kusama and Bangladeshi pioneer artists.

Official Opening: Saturday, 5 October 2019, 3pm – 7pm
at Artspace @ Helutrans | 39 Keppel Road, Singapore 089065

Collectors’ Forum and Book Launch: Saturday, 12 October 2019, 3pm – 4.30pm
In conjunction with the exhibition, a Collectors’ Forum and Book Launch of 10 Years // 11 Stories: artcommune Anniversary Celebration will take place at Artspace @ Helutrans. In particular, the Collectors’ Forum will see some of the contributing collectors sharing insights to art collecting and thoughts on Singapore art.
