The traditional white shirt has become a distinctive iconic garment for years and has been a classic must-have item in wardrobes today. This research inspired the students of the BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries and BA(Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles programmes to re-define this timeless fashion staple through different design approaches, and to push the research through social innovation businesses and fashion future discourses.
Singapore, City of The Eternal Summer, located on the 1°17′N latitude, provides the background for the students to inquire on issues of migration, heritage, culture and weather to develop their white shirt projects. The students were grouped in 3 different research clusters (Design, Curation and Archive; Design Futures; Social Innovation and Enterprise). The students’ creative processes show the way they responded to these different themes and how they see the world of fashion today. Their projects reflect their way to challenge the preconceived notions of the fashion system. This entire white shirt experiment will be shown in an exhibition curated in an open-air metal grid installation with the real weather conditions of Singapore as a natural backdrop.
