RE/PLAY Dance Edit directed and choreographed by Junnosuke Tada with collaborators Kitamari and Tatsunori Imamura, was first premiered by Tada’s theatre company, Theatre Deathlock, in Tokyo in 2011. RE/PLAY Dance Edit explores the intent and meaning of re-production through bodily repetition of physical movements. Using pop music, the performers dance until they collapse in exhaustion – and then they get up and do it again, each choreographer-dancer taking a turn at their own approach to the performance. In this production under the aegis of TADA’s direction, the very foundation and meaning of dance is examined, performance as a format is subverted, and a fresh perspective on dance and performance emerges.
For the performance in Singapore, Tada will be working with six Singaporean dancers namely Elizabeth Loh, Jaenny Chandra, Ma Yanling, Mario Chan, Sufri Juwahir and Sheriden Newman. This is the first international collaboration between TheatreWorks (Singapore) and Offsite Dance Project (Japan).
“Is RE/PLAY Dance Edit a theatre piece or a dance piece? – it doesn’t matter… what is important is that the piece opens new possibilities in performance.”
– Chikara Fujiwara, Dance Critic
“The actual person of the dancer (as in the dancer’s personal life) is told as one kind of “real story” through the repetition of music (along with repeated choreography) which is also nested in a simple but strong theatrical structure.”
– Satoru Kimura, Dance Critic
This production once again follows TheatreWorks’ focus on presenting works that defy convention and re-defines artistic boundaries. RE/PLAY Dance Edit hopes to offer Singapore audiences alternatives to what is regularly seen in Singapore and it continues TheatreWorks’ interest in spotting new talents in the Singapore arts landscape.
This is the first TheatreWorks’ collaboration with Offsite Dance Project that combines the creative energies of Japan’s new wave of contemporary performance artists with those from Singapore. A Cambodian version of RE/PLAY Dance Edit is being planned for 2017.
RE/PLAY Dance Edit celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore.
