Referencing the Doomsday Clock’s current and most alarming setting, ‘89 Seconds to Midnight’ is Anthony White’s urgent, expressive response to a world on edge. This continuing body of work navigates the evolving threats of ecological collapse, authoritarianism, and civil unrest through landscapes that are both sublime and unsettled.
White’s artistic practice is centred on the intersection of politics, human rights, and postcolonialism, exploring the agency of art to provoke thought and inspire change. His canvases often depict destabilised terrains – Tasmanian forests ravaged by fire, Siberian snowscapes that recall gulag brutality – yet layered with a strange, luminous hope. They are not merely depictions of catastrophe, but acts of visual resistance.
His recent works reflect extensive research, including a Rome-based residency exploring l’effondrement (collapse) and political dissidence. Pieces such as 89 Seconds (2025) and Snowscape (Gulag) (2024) confront global anxieties while invoking memory, myth, and the artist’s personal connection to place.
