Shui Tit Sing (1914–1997) was a significant and multifaceted figure in the development of modern art in Singapore and the wider Chinese art world. A painter, sculptor, educator and photographer, Shui approached photography not as a secondary practice to painting, but as a vital way of seeing, organising experience and forming an artistic language.
Centred on Shui’s photographic works, this exhibition presents images made during his travels, teaching and artistic practice across Singapore, Malaya, Thailand, Cambodia and the wider Southeast Asian region. Street markets, harbours, temples, figures, villages and everyday scenes appear through his lens not simply as records of place, but as evidence of how a modern artist observed, selected and reimagined the world around him.
