From the Studio Series, DISINI Festival 2018, Curated by Khairuddin Hori
DISINI festival and Chan + Hori Contemporary presents its second solo exhibition as part of the From the Studio series. Featuring esteemed Thai contemporary artist, Kamin Lertchaiprasert, this special exhibition holds a mysterious title, “Kamin Lertchaiprasert”. It follows on from Emptiness, a series of work that developed at his studio in Chiang Mai, Thailand, over the last three years and features his recent paintings, sculptures, video installations and works on paper. To Kamin, art is – at its core – a ritualistic practice, aimed at the achievement of a greater understanding of oneself, nature and the world as a whole.
This solo exhibition connects with Kamin’s monumental outdoor installation, The Ground, currently on exhibit at Malan Road as part of DISINI. Consisting of three life-sized papier-mâché sculptures in transparent vitrines stacked around eight-metres high, The Ground comprises a tree trunk, elephant and figure in meditation that took 18 years to produce. It speaks of the interdependence between man and nature, as excessive consumption disrupts the natural order and contributes to a hollowed human existence.
