A State of Affairs (or the way things are) is a collection of lived experiences. Rather than capturing moments, the act of image making in the presented works are motivated by the urge to comprehend, to make better of, to heal or learn from the circumstances that make up our state of affairs.
These images question the conditions that had led to the current state of affairs (how did we end up here), while also declaring (unapologetically) the way things simply are. From relationships hindered by mental illness, beliefs or diaspora, to strangers connected by a photographer’s lens. The works each highlight a specific circumstance but piece together an observation of the bigger narrative around us.
