The Mid-Autumn festival is where one contemplates the full moon either resplendent in the night sky, or reflected in water, sipping tea and nibbling on mooncakes. Aaron Gan’s Reflections is an opportunity for the watercolour artist to reflect upon his painting practice and survey the various series he has generated since turning full-time in 2012. From his selection into the International Watercolour Biennale in Belgium (2012), the warm reception and sell-out success of his debut solo show A Point of View (2013) in the British watercolour style, the sudden conversion to a monochromatic palette reminiscent of traditional Chinese painting in Life as Art (2015) and its more colourful bird-and-flower reworking in Joy (2016), to the abstract award-winning squares of Starry Starry Night (UOB Painting of the Year, Gold Award, Established Artist Category 2015), Aaron has plumbed the depths of tradition and emerged with his own voice in not just one, but several innovative directions. Reflections offers us a light tasting of old and new compositions in past styles, as a sampling of the talent of Aaron in his chosen medium of watercolour.
