Kwon Soonik has been one of Art Art Sohyang’s stable artists since 2013. This is his 4th solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Singapore. This exhibition features works from Kwon’s recent solo exhibition at The Chun Art Museum in Shanghai, which ended in August 2026. Absence of Ego is a practice of emptying the ego, in which time and memory encounter layers of materiality, symbolising spiritual release.
The origins of Kwon’s work trace back to a childhood memory: the experience of light on the black earth of an abandoned mining village in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, and the sensorial memory of graphite’s deep sheen. This selection is an accumulated body of work by Kwon Soonik, in which the artist condenses his four decades of meditative practice, philosophy, values, emotions, dreams, thoughts, and lived experience. He places dots on the surface, builds layer upon layer of earth and pigment, and grinds and overlays them with graphite, repeating this arduous process of bodily action to establish a visual language entirely his own. The gaps between become spaces that allow one to breathe amid life’s anxieties and dissatisfactions.
