The exhibition showcases a new body of work by Didin Jirot that is informed by the landscape of Indonesia and his roots as a Balinese. Influenced by the forms of the canang sari, a type of floral offering made by the Balinese Hindus in their prayers. Continuing the artists’ engagement with canang sari, Actual Occasions sees Didin translate expanded concepts on landscape perception in the medium of air-brushed acrylic paintings. With a strikingly vibrant colour palette, the electric paintings, allude to the sensory interaction with the Indonesian landscape rather than the physicality of moving through it.
The creation and placement canang sari is said to maintain balance and peace on earth; this same prayer intention is extended into the landscapes paintings of Actual Occasions. Reflecting on the processes, associations and transformations as the basic and true elements of the everday, lived world. As the title implies an actual occasion is not a material or substance but rather the activity of realization. By which the world is grasped through processes and experience, interconnected and intricate, that coalesce into peace and balance in a world that is reinvigorated each day.
