Future Form: Adaptive Craft for Speculative Dystopia by the School of Spatial and Product Design
This showcase explores the intersection of vernacular craft, specifically rattan and woven techniques, with dystopian design aesthetics and biomimicry principles. Students collaborate to design and create objects that reflect a future where environmental challenges have drastically reshaped humanity’s relationship with natural materials. The resulting outcome must serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, drawing inspiration from traditional craft practices while adapting them to the conditions of a dystopian future.
Students identify peculiar sitting and resting activities in uncommon scenarios. They incorporate principles of biomimicry in flora to this furniture. The (sitting & resting) furniture offers unique and innovative functional benefits inspired by biological systems and structures. The designs merges rattan, weaving, and biomimetic principles to create functional and aesthetically compelling products.
Singapore – A Design Thesis in the Making by the Faculty of Design
Singapore – A Design Thesis in the Making is a multidisciplinary project that reimagines Singapore through a matrix of sites and situations—both physical and conceptual. This project explores Singapore as a city, a home, a memory, a moment, a philosophical site, a living archive, a collective identity, and a field of imagination. The exhibition interrogates and expands the understanding of Singapore by situating it within everyday lived experiences, historical tensions, cultural mythologies, and speculative futures. The exhibition aspires to foster a deeper appreciation of Singapore’s multifaceted identity and the role of design in shaping the narratives that define it.
