Aliwal Urban Arts Festival 2025

Rev your engines and roll up for the Aliwal Urban Arts Festival (AUAF), returning on 25 January 2025 at the Aliwal Arts Centre (AAC)! Organised by Arts House Limited on the final weekend of Singapore Art Week 2025, this adrenaline-fueled festival brings you an electrifying lineup of street culture vibes—think visual art, graffiti, skateboarding try-outs and more.

This year’s AUAF presents the first edition of TAILORED: Bore & Stroke, an exciting exhibition exploring the spirit of customisation in the automotive world and its influence on art, urban culture, fashion and lifestyle. Curated by The Block A Collective, this exhibition unpacks our deepest desire for personal expression through works by artists and creatives such as TraseOne, Metamo Industries, Mad Rat Inc. and more! Visitors can also pick up a new skill or two at the airbrushing and poster design workshops led by some of the exhibition’s featured artists.

Don’t miss the opportunity to get up close and personal with the centre’s artistic groups! Get a glimpse into the inner workings of their creative practice through open studios and a range of activities, from theatre workshops by Avant Theatre and Language to concerts by weird aftertaste and a breakthrough performance by New Opera Theatre in collaboration with RSCLS.

Catch some of the best graffiti artists from the region in action as they transform AAC’s side and back walls with new murals in real-time. A staple event of AUAF, these live graffiti painting sessions showcase the evolving canvas of the festival over the years. Visitors looking to get creative can pop by RSCLS’s graffiti try-outs for a chance to leave their mark by spray painting the AAC’s side alley. Additionally, for just $5/pax, sign up for D’TOUR by RSCLS and see the enclave of Kampong Gelam with new eyes in this alternative walking tour.

Aliwal Carpark will come alive with beginner-friendly skateboarding sessions—fret not—safety gear and skateboards will be provided for all participants. SkateSG will also organise a competition featuring dynamic obstacles co-created with the community. Also happening at the Aliwal Carpark is an art market, Creators Marketplace by Suave Cartel Media, where visitors can check out 15-20 specially curated booths and participate in exciting raffle draws with attractive prizes to be won.

Finally, end the festival on a high with riveting performances, where visitors are invited to jam out to music from live DJ sets curated by Red Kite Music and exciting dance programmes curated by Singaporean dancer Darren Toh (“dt”).

Is Ai Weiwei a figure of the past?

By embodying recognisable themes of political dissent, ideological trauma and cultural memory, early Chinese contemporary artists like Ai Weiwei acted as interfaces that helped the West understand China.
