For her first solo exhibition in Singapore, Anila Quayyum Agha (b. 1965, Lahore, Pakistan) presents new and recent work that examines race, gender, cultural identity, colonial histories, and humanity’s relationship to nature. She brings together vibrant collages, resin paintings, embroidered drawings, and immersive light installations.
Agha’s practice reflects her training in fiber arts and her commitment to materials and techniques long marginalized as “craft.” Inspired by artists who challenged those hierarchies, she creates work that speaks both to her lived experience and to universal questions of belonging, power, and beauty.
The vivid collages from her Cabinets of Curiosities series were shaped by pandemic isolation and a fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution. Layered, intricately stitched, and set in resin, they address colonial perspectives on botanical art and the exploitation of cultures and natural resources.
