The Last Tree Was a Building is a multi-site public art activation by Singaporean artist ANTZ, presented by Art Outreach Singapore during Singapore Art Week 2026. Spanning rooftops, ledges, and public spaces across Gillman Barracks, the project features monumental inflatable monkeys from ANTZ’s Urban Monkeys series, playful yet watchful figures that invite visitors to look up and reconsider how nature, memory, and the built environment coexist.
Anchored by Field Test, a companion pop-up studio and exhibition, the project offers insight into ANTZ’s creative process through sketches, studies, and new works that reimagine Singapore’s signage culture as sites of humour, disruption, and storytelling. Together, the outdoor interventions and indoor presentation transform Gillman Barracks into a site of reflection, exploration, and encounter.
