April Ng Kiow Ngor: The Depths Within is a solo exhibition of over 25 new mono-edition intaglio print works by Singapore artist April Ng Kiow Ngor. On view from 13 to 24 November 2024, the exhibition charts April Ng’s latest experimentation with intaglio print materials and techniques. Over the past decade, April Ng’s devotion to printmaking, particularly the intaglio process, has given rise to a unique body of work that is radiant and original in its artistic execution of the fluid entanglement of will and freedom. Eschewing traditional methods, her compositions are derived from incisions and rubbings on the surfaces of industrial mat boards rather than copper or zinc plates. Her expressions of engraving, etching and drypoint techniques are also achieved without the use of acids such as aquatint or mezzotint, which are commonly employed in the intaglio process.
This new series by April Ng hints at traces of nature experienced, lost or found. Textures, lines, marks and dots are gracefully layered and synchronised, dwelling indefinably on the surface yet sensed achingly like tangible residue of everyday reflections, memories and yearnings. Many of the works also draw on elements of Chinese ink wash painting with their fluid, variated brushstrokes and delicate ink wash atmosphere. Situating the ephemeral and the elusive through etched marks and concrete values, the artist invites us to explore the intersections of these seemingly oppositional yet interdependent qualities.
