52 Tales is a mentorship-cum-exhibition by the Band of Doodlers (BOD), supported by the National Youth Council in celebration of Youth Month. There are 52 artworks for Singapore’s 52 years of nation building.
This is the Singapore narrative based on local tales, folklore and idiosyncrasies re-interpreted through the perspectives of youths. The exhibition serves as a reminder to our youths that the Singapore identity is a summation of all the years of toil, sacrifice and contribution of pioneers and future generation alike. 52 Tales also serves as a platform of co-creation and bring a sense of social belonging and emotional rootedness for the youth. This is especially designed to provide youth accessibility and relevance to trials and tribulations of yesteryears.
As part of the mentorship, over 100 young artists were selected as mentees from an open call that garnered over 250 applicants. They have collaborated to deliver 52 artworks. This exhibition is unique in that each of the 52 artwork is a co-created piece between a pair of artists. This is analogous to the saying that there is always two sides to a tale. It also reinforces the importance of collaboration and instill a greater sense of empathy among the youths involved.
