Dr Earl Lu Ming-Teh was born in Hong Kong in 1925, before he came over to Singapore in 1938. He completed his medical degree in Australia before becoming a medical surgeon by profession. He was also one of Singapore’s most important art collector, philanthropist, and the founding chairman of Singapore Art Museum. As a student, he started collecting art in the form of prints and photographs, and grew to be an avid collector of Chinese and Southeast Asian brush paintings and ceramics. He had donated most of them to various institutions, including the Asian Civilisations Museum. He began painting in his early thirties under the tutelage of the Singapore pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi, and is famous for his paintings of roses in full bloom.
