What was the very first publication printed on Singapore soil? Who were the pioneers that first believed in the power of telling distinctly Singaporean stories?
This exhibition traces the history of publishing in Singapore – from the earliest missionary presses of the 1800s, through the rise of vernacular publishing, to the post-independence boom that shaped a nation of readers.
As Singapore celebrates 60 years of independence, we spotlight the pivotal decade that not only marked the beginning of nationhood; but also laid the foundation for a publishing industry owned and driven by Singaporeans. That era of creativity and innovation endures till today.
This exhibition is commissioned by Singapore Writers Festival 2025 under SG60 Homage, which honours individuals, groups, movements and ideas that have significantly enriched the Singapore literary scene.
