BELIEVE: A Collection of Wondrous Creatures

Do you believe in fairies? Do you? Do you? Peter Pan does. So does Black Crow Taxidermy & Art. UltraSuperNew Gallery presents a one-of-a-kind art exhibition that brings fantastical fiction into reality, where fairies and three-headed dogs exist.

When one thinks of taxidermy, our thoughts go straight to grotesque goat heads mounted on a cabin wall. Think again. In BELIEVE, things take a magical (and ethical) turn. Exploring the intersection of art, science and nature, the exhibition goes beyond just traditional taxidermy. Black Crow debuts original works of art, from butterfly mandalas to canvas compositions using paint and clay and other magnificent original creations. Expect to be enthralled by up-close-and-personal encounters with these creatures, that in their natural habitat, flee at first sight. The sheer display of beauty and colours is sure to bring a newfound appreciation for nature, biodiversity and mythology.

From a young age, we’ve heard all sorts of stories about mythical creatures. Figments of a hyperactive imagination that desperately wants to believe in the existence of these fantastical beings. Do fairies look like the feisty Tinker Bell, or like the mischievous Puck from A Midsummer’s Night Dream? What if they’re neither? In the exhibition, fairies exist and persist in person, reinvigorating the magic of childhood stories. They’re assembled using ethically sourced insects — with a stick insect body, the head of a beetle and butterfly wings. Straight from the mind’s eye of the artist, these fantastical fairies are brought into reality. Other mythical creatures are up for viewing too. Such as Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld – reimagined using skeletal remains of multiple dogs. Turning man’s best friend into your worst living nightmare (in death). Believe in magic yet?

Suitable for the whole family, BELIEVE is a celebration of life and the depths of imagination. If you can think up an idea, it can manifest in reality.
