Join us on a journey into the world of Tepo weaving, a traditional craft deeply rooted in the Bajau Sama DiLaut culture of Pulau Omadal. Discover how this ancient art form has become a lifeline, providing the Bajau Laut Community with a sustainable income and preserving its rich cultural heritage. Learn about the intricate patterns and motifs inspired by the sea and how the Tikar Reben project fosters unity among different Bajau communities.
We’ll also hear from Firdaus Sani, the founder of Orang Laut SG and a fourth-generation Orang Laut/Pulau descendant from Pulau Semakau.
Firdaus will share the lived experiences of his elders growing up on Pulau Semakau and his passion for preserving the unique culture of the Orang Laut people. He’ll discuss the challenges the Orang Laut community faces, including issues related to access to traditional fishing grounds and sustainable fishing practices.
By understanding the similarities and differences between the Orang Laut and Bajau Laut communities, we can work together to support these marginalised groups and preserve their invaluable cultural heritage.
