As Singapore celebrates its 55th birthday, it enters a world very different from that of last year. An insidious virus has infected the globe. Humanity has been sequestered in small bubbles, unable to touch, reach out and converse in ways it used to. International travel has been curtailed, large gatherings forbidden and trade severely impaired. Social distancing and digital communication are our new modes of interaction. Globally, superpower relations are deteriorating. Locally, our recent elections saw a seismic shift in attitudes.
In this light, our gallery artists were asked to respond to the given theme, and how they saw our present state and foreseeable future. While a few have been contemplatively tentative, most have been cheerily optimistic, preferring a destiny where we regain our dignity and purpose, and overcome our obstacles. This, then, is our Brave New World.
