In Causal Curiosity, Jamie Teo presents a new series of abstract paintings that explore ‘mental images’ as the subject of causality, drawn from the artist’s personal experiences in the past year.
Causal refers to the relationship between cause and effect, and is also a play on casual curiosity, where Teo documented transient moments that held her attention, questioning her attraction towards certain mental images.
Teo’s current practice expands beyond her fascination with abstraction within the world of images; the subjective and objective perception of colours. In addition to masterfully blending oil paints into seamless gradients, Teo blends in real-world everyday subjects that she observed, adding layered, contextual narratives to her paintings, examining the abstract and the real.
Navigating between the openness of abstraction and the artist’s own emotions, Causal Curiosity opens up a sense of vulnerability to the viewers and offers them a more personal observation into her practice.
