With the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, the artists of the Central Asian Republics have increasingly been attracting international attention.
This lecture provides an introduction and overview of the origins, influences and developments of the art of Central Asia. The talk begins with an outline of the Silk Route legacy that introduced Greek, Indian, Chinese and Persian/Arabic influences into the region; influences that are echoed in contemporary work. It then goes on to focus in detail on 20th century currents, including the introduction of academic painting, Socialist Realism and, from the 1950s onwards, exposure to modernist currents such as abstract expressionism.
The talk will conclude by discussing the current developments that reflect identity, spirituality and cultural roots of the Region, in connection with the exhibition New Silk Roads: Painting Beyond Borders
