Southeast Asian art in its contemporary form is as diverse as the many lands, languages, cultures and nationalities that it is comprised of. Yet there are many meeting points, where artists’ thoughts and creative energies cross the lines to connect. Our histories, in particular Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar (because we have experience of these artists) do bear thematic links. There is resonance in the many themes in this exhibition – being/living in a safe space, isolation and individualism, freedoms and control, issues of gender and women, personal and local histories.
The artworks selected reflect the diversity of the artists represented. Often these are recent works, although we have included a few older works where available, to show transitions, or ongoing pre-occupations of the artists.
