Deusa Blümke & Hélène Le Chatelier: FOLDS OF MIND

Deusa Blumke, Once Upon A Time, book series, mixed media on transparent sheets, 2017

NPE Gallery launches onto the Singapore art scene with the inaugural exhibition FOLDS OF MIND by Hélène Le Chatelier and Deusa Blümke this June. With a unique flavour, this show tackles the topics of time, memory, the unseen and the unspeakable. It gives insight into the creative process and explores how each has pushed the boundaries of their artistic process during their time as NPE Artists in Residence. FOLDS OF MIND will reveal new artworks, which the artists have developed with the use of new techniques and technologies during their time at NPE.

Using expressive painting gestures, Deusa Blümke’s paintings are intuitively guided by the shapes and colours that emerge in the layers of her artworks. In her current practice Deusa creates art between layers of Plexiglas and other unconventional materials, exploring transparency, movement, gravity and time to achieve immediacy and richness.

At NPE, Deusa has explored painting on paper, adding new layers of process to her works by printing and enlarging her creations digitally. Having graduated with her Fine Arts MA in 2016, and BA(Hons) from LASALLE in 2012, Brazilian-born Deusa’s artworks are reflections of life’s colourful surprises.

In contrast, Hélène Le Chatelier works mainly in monotone in order to question all aspects of memory, the idea of the passage of time, and the traces it leaves on our bodies and in our lives.

Hélène will present Missing Part, a new series of works made from hand written and delicately cut papers, which draw our eyes to the voids of the forgotten, the erased, and the things which can not be spoken aloud. This series examines the process of deconstructing our memories in order to recompose them, giving them a new shape and sense. Hélène studied Art in Paris at l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art, Olivier de Serres, and creates work across diverse mediums such as paper, chinese ink painting, sculpture, video and installation.
