“Elemental Form” brings together a selection of ceramic works in conversation with paintings and botanical arrangements. Shaped by the alchemy of the four elements – earth, fire, water and air, traditionally considered the building blocks of matter and the physical universe – the ceramic vessels by Hans Chew and Sean Lim capture a sense of these natural forces and symbolic energies with their organic shapes and intimations of landscapes.
These explorations in form are echoed in Fawn World’s botanical arrangements that respond to Chew’s vessels, as well as in Tay Bak Chiang’s minimalist paintings that evoke the monumentality of stone and the vitality of energy in motion. Finally, ‘elemental’ could also refer to essential or constituent parts of a whole: a notion explored in Singaporean-British artist Hannah Lim’s anthropomorphic snuff bottles that draw on the artist’s mixed parentage and multicultural background, bringing together elements from various cultures and artistic traditions.
