In collaboration with the Singapore Biennale 2019 and LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, Singapore, Level 2 Diploma in Dance students will be researching the performance element of Gary-Ross Pastrana’s work Properties (2019). Through performance, the dancers will explore the props as live bodies in dialogue with their embodiment, focusing on reanimating the objects within Properties. This is as stated by Pastrana, “breathing life into the objects, before slowly returning back to silence and stillness”.
This project is conceptualised by Pastrana and lecturer Susan Sentler as an expanded classroom experience, with the performances serving as a ‘lab’ where the explorations are to be archived and discussed providing an extension to the research inherent in Pastrana’s work and practice. Furthermore, it will serve to challenge and expand the students’ knowledge of performance in association with visual arts and the context of the gallery as site.
Monday 10 February (3:00 – 5:00pm) and Tuesday 11 February (1:00pm – 2.30pm) will be the first encounters, in which the students will learn about Pastrana’s artistic practice and this particular work. They will workshop on site in the Earl Lu Gallery.
Following this they will engage in performances within the window of the following time frames:
Mon 17 Feb, 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Tue 18 Feb, 1:00pm – 2.30pm
Mon 2 Mar, 3:00pm – 5:00pm
