“Fernweh – Scenes of Germany & abroad” is a solo exhibition by 2006 Cultural Medallion recipient Tan Choh Tee. From 1st November to 1st December 2024, viewers will be treated to a collection of en plein air Impressionist landscape paintings of a myriad of countries at Confluence Art Space.
Tan, hailed as the Matisse of the East by Tatler (Singapore) magazine, has a creative process that is governed by the artist’s insistence on painting from life. This has spurred him to travel the world in search of inspiration. Fernweh, the title of the exhibition, a German word for “the yearning for travel”, was specially selected to emphasise the highlight of this exhibition – a set of six paintings of German towns that were completed during an expedition in June 2024.
These six paintings captured the unique landscapes and architecture of German towns Michelstadt, Groß-Umstadt, Dieburg, and Miltenberg. To illustrate the characteristics of these rustic regions, Tan employed strong, vibrant hues and confident brushwork to pair with the light and airy atmosphere. Unlike the artist’s usual creations that involved further work after his return to Singapore, these six canvases were largely completed on-site in Germany.
