“Florette” is a solo exhibition by the late Tay Bak Koi, one of Singapore’s most esteemed second- generation artists. Celebrated for his innovation and creativity, Tay’s legacy will be showcased through a curated selection of 19 oil and mixed media masterpieces, on view from 10 October to 2 November 2025 at our Gallery, located at 2 Havelock Road, #02-29 Havelock 2, Singapore 059763.
The cover painting, Beholding a Joyful Harvest, was a heartfelt gift from Tay Bak Koi to his beloved daughter. Its luminous blend of pink, purple, and reddish hues – rare even within Tay’s experimental practice – imbues the work with a tender radiance that both complements and elevates the spirit of its central feminine figure. Around her, the luxuriant patterns of the tablecloth, vessels of quiet grace, intricately rendered fruits, and the gentle scattering of flower petals deepen the work’s feminine energy and evoking a sense of abundance, nurture, and grace.
As its title suggests, Florette invites visitors into a world where flowers emerge as recurring motifs – guiding them on a journey in which curiosity blossoms and understanding of Tay’s artistry takes root and flourishes. At the heart of Florette lies the enduring presence of flowers – symbols of vitality, renewal, and grace that weave through Tay Bak Koi’s practice in subtle yet profound ways. In Tay’s hands, flowers became a language of tenderness, abundance, and spirit, illuminating the everyday with quiet poetry. This exhibition celebrates not only his artistry but also the timeless resonance of these floral motifs, which continue to bloom in the viewer’s imagination.
