“Flower, Not” is a group exhibition featuring contemporary ink artists from Singapore, China and Hong Kong, namely Song Ling (b. 1961), Oh Chai Hoo (b. 1960), Hua Jun (b. 1970), Wang Shaoqiang (b. 1970), Jiang Heng (b. 1972), Tan Seow Wei (b. 1979) and Chui Pui-chee (b. 1980).
Referencing a poem by renowned Chinese Poet of the Tang dynasty, Bai Juyi, and much like Magritte’s La Trahison des images, the exhibition hints on its subversive nature. Flowers, symbolism and metaphors are old friends who have long held significance in ancient mythology, folklore and literature across civilizations. Our love affair with the bloom and wither continues to manifest in modern societies, in outlandish forms. Attempting to investigate the relationship between meaning and representation, the seven artists of different cultural heritages, socio-political backgrounds and generational influences have imbued fresh connotations to the age-old imagery. More specifically, they are searching for new and unique visual language.
