Con-Temporary Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Nathan Tan in collaboration with writer-curator Rachel Lin, opening on 17th October. Tracing the remarkable and complex history of the flowerhorn fish, a man-made hybrid that once captivated an entire generation, the exhibition unpacks Singapore’s fascination with beauty, superstition, and desire.
Created in the late 1990s through the selective crossbreeding of several cichlid species, the flowerhorn is a creature born entirely of human intervention. A flowerhorn craze reached fever pitch in the early to mid-2000s, appearing in homes, shops, and offices.
