For Those Who Have Been Killed is a solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Vincent Leow, the exhibition is curated by Christina Arum Sok.
This body of work considers the concept of memes as related to international social and political issues and how they are discussed and shared on social media. Drawn to the endless online narratives of people killed in wars, massacres, executions and other heinous crimes, often where the victims are children and youths, Leow appropriates names and texts gathered from social media accounts of the incidents and reconfigures it into his artwork, transforming the grim content into a commentary on the news itself.
In Leow’s work, paintings are combined with objects to create sculptural pieces, while recognisable items are incorporated into the stencilled text and painted surfaces. Most of the paintings are monochromatic to establish a blurred atmospheric quality, suggesting notions of confusion. The text hints at the original context and provides the artist’s interpretations and emotional response to the ceaseless flood of disturbing world events and detached meme commentary.
For Those Who Have Been Killed is the third in a series of four projects curated by Christina Arum Sok, the 2014 recipient of the VADA Curatorial Mentorship and Training Programme. Her series of projects seek innovative ways to communicate the diversity of contemporary art practice. As she notes, “In stripping down the expected boundaries between the art, the artist and the audience, we are creating an alternative platform and forum for contemporary art practice, opening up possibilities of engagement, interaction, interjection and interpretation.”
