For its very first interactive photo exhibition, Our Grandfather Story brings the sights of Sungei Road Thieves’ Market to audiences, recreated in a gallery setting. 180 postcards and zines will be lined on plastic tarps, cardboards and small tables just like they are displayed at the market.
As is the case of many flea markets, hidden gems require a keen eye and patience to dig out. The postcards encourage viewers to bend down and pick them up so that they can take a closer look at the item.
Also on display at the gallery will be original artworks created on cardboards by 13 emerging artists. Ranging from charcoal, acrylic and 3D works using objects purchased at the market, these pieces were created on-location at the Thieves’ Market. From the makeshift surfaces used by vendors to display miscellaneous wares, to the hierarchy in which the goods are displayed, these artworks emulate the bustle of the market.
