The National Museum of Singapore invites grandparents and their families to spend a meaningful day together to commemorate Grandparents’ Day on Saturday, 23 November 2019. This event is part of the museum’s ongoing series of Family Fun programmes. Grandparents’ Day is a celebration to highlight the important role that grandparents play in families. It is a special day to show appreciation and to spend quality time as a family through intergenerational activities. The public can expect a line-up of family-friendly programmes such as film screenings, a percussion performance by preschoolers from My First Skool and seniors from NTUC Health, as well as an intergenerational art jamming workshop.
The museum’s Care Facilitators will also conduct a senior-friendly guided tour for seniors, persons with dementia and their care partners to explore artefacts and stories from yesteryear at the Life in Singapore galleries. Care Facilitators are part of a new volunteer group at the National Museum of Singapore to support care initiatives for seniors and visitors with special needs. Members of the public who are interested to sign up to be part of this meaningful initiative as a Care Facilitator can find out more on the National Museum’s website.
Young visitors can also look forward to activities that cater specially to them, including a storytelling session where they get to climb on board a magnificent ship deck and discover the museum’s latest exhibition, An Old New World, through the eyes of Singapura’s earliest inhabitants – the Orang Laut.
Visitors to the An Old New World exhibition can also look forward to picking up collectible cards featuring 12 artefacts in the exhibition. The cards, released in November 2019, and again in February 2020, are exclusive mementoes which visitors can take home after answering questions about An Old New World at a quiz booth located outside the exhibition. Visitors can also test their knowledge on Singapore’s pre-colonial history and stand a chance to win prizes.
