Hatch Art Project presents Indonesian artist Iabadiou Piko’s first solo exhibition in Singapore. Haiku Aku (My Haiku): Iabadiou Piko Solo Exhibition comprises several paintings spanning the artist’s career, as well as an installation painting, that reveal the poetic sensibilities in the artist’s visceral and ‘childlike’ compositions.
In the same way poetry and literature are evocative in nature, Piko’s paintings rely upon overlapping layers of colours, strokes and lines, for us to conjure the memories that fuel his mindscapes — an approach reminiscent of a particular strain of literature: haiku. The haiku is a literary style that uses short stanzas to capture and depict the essence of a moment in time. Piko’s creations; whether abstractions of landscapes, horizons, sceneries, or even of ambiguous creatures; are to be read as stanzas that form his visual haiku — one that is vested in portraying the essence of his enigmatic world(s). Piko’s poetic sensibility is also seen in the manner in which he titles his works. His bare artwork titles, almost as if they were lines in a haiku, hint towards what is depicted without revealing everything.
