How do diasporic Singaporeans and Southeast Asians juggle hybrid identity and national belonging? How does culture evolve in places of global traffic? Singapore collective Vertical Submarine, curated by iola Lenzi, takes this dichotomy as a starting point to conceptualise Hotel illiterati for SAW2022. Through the trope of a hotel, this playful, experiential installation, presented in a heritage Katong shop-house, invites viewers to investigate the aesthetics and debates of cultural translation and the liminal spaces between cultural-social belonging, re-invention, and transgression.
