As the daughter of a geography teacher, Nandini grew up observing the markings of various types of maps, travelling extensively through these terrains by visualizing the bedtime stories narrated to her.
Her body of work has developed as an exploration into the contours of landforms within the unconscious mind, through the medium of painting with graphite. This on-going process of art-making progressed as a state of being in a constant and uniform concentration of energy, developing her two primary techniques of repetition and layering. Now armed with the tools required to approach the vast spectrum of land, and the location of the self within its contours, Nandini nutures the harmony and rhythm within the series as a result of the research, travel and material that she had the opportunity to explore, creating a fluent collection of works.
Nandini Hasija is part of INSTINC’s artist-in-residence program. This exhibition consist of her graphite paintings on paper, exhibited within INSTINC SOHO, her final presentation of her new works after her month long residency in Singapore.
