The third edition of InkMagination is a group show by June Lee Yu Juan, Hélène Le Chatelier, Yen Chua, Madame, Pang, Yves Hasselman and Tania Nasr. It continues exploring contemporary ink art in the practice of Singaporean and French artists.
Ink art is not central to European art as it is in Chinese art. Indeed, since the literati painters in the Imperial China of the 13th century until today, with contemporay atists such as Zao Wou Ki or Xu Bing, ink has been the main medium used by Chinese artists in conjunction with poetry and calligraphy.
However, famous European artists such as Rembrandt and Nicolas Poussin in the 17th century or more recently Pierre Soulages have also extensively used the ink medium. The first objective of InkMagination is precisely to bring together Singaporean and French artists whose practice, though rooted in a different cultural background, intersect through the common ink medium.
InkMagination also strives to show how the creativity and imagination of these contemporary artists rejuvanate Chinese calligraphy on the one hand, Western aesthetic on the other. Moreover, InkMagination goes beyond visual art and associates poetry, writing, music and performance.
I Wish I WERE Here, Writing, Erasing, Recomposing, Expanding, focuses on memory and on the role of the artists in writing personal and national history.
