Things fall together

The show’s title Things Fall Together has turned out to be uncannily prescient in light of the events of surrounding the Art Stage cancellation! In the show, Yeo, Abilama and the Kabata sisters come together in a profusion of emotion and exuberance underpinned by loss, longing, humour and irony. Yeo challenges and departs from preconceived notions of Warholian screen printing with her bold “screenpaintings,” while Abilama celebrates the complicated genius of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew. Chihiro and Yuuri Kabata, artists from Japan, explore notions of control and balance while executing their wildly abstract works.

Artists:
Yeo Shih Yun – With a critically-acclaimed on-going solo exhibition at the National University of Singapore Museum Diaries, Marking Time and Other Preoccupations, artist Yeo Shih Yun and founder of INSTINC will present her one-of-a-kind “screenpaintings.” Through her unique methods, she cleverly marries the techniques of screen printing and ink painting to create delightful abstract works.

Chihiro Kabata – Japanese artist Chihiro Kabata uses nothing more than the humble ballpoint pen to create swirls and flurries, reminiscent of delicate ink brushstrokes. Her works are inspired and informed by the writings of seminal Singapore authors Catherine Lim, Alfian Sa’at and Gopal Baratham.

Yuuri Kabata – Sister of Chihiro Kabata, Yuuri assigns “fixed rules” to each painting at the outset and then executes each work in conformity to its own preset rules. Yet one would be hard-pressed to discern any hint of rigidity or constraint when viewing her works, with their seemingly free and random drips and swirls.

Laudi Abilama – Lebanese artist Abilama returns to Singapore after a sold-out exhibition in 2015 featuring portraits of the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. In 2019, she will reveal more portraits of Lee as well as powerful new works in collaboration with Yeo, which were inspired by the historic 2018 Trump-Kim Singapore Summit. Her thought-provoking pieces are informed by her sensibilities as a concerned global citizen
