Approaching an aspect of Singapore’s history from the intimate lives of historical actors, this exhibition shines a light on remittance letters sent home by Chinese migrant workers in Singapore in the 20th century, focusing on two periods: before and after World War Two. These letters were often accompanied by money and other items migrants sent to their families back home in China.

Intimacies displays the project creators’ artistic responses to the letters, exploring the historical context, affective value and the material medium of letter-writing.
