As the title suggests, this talk aims to equip participants with a basic understanding of the early art scene in Singapore. The discussion points for the session are as follows:
1. Pre-war Singapore art
2. Post-war Singapore art
3. The Nanyang Era, 1950s to 60s
4. Some important first generation artists:
– Nanyang school: Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Yeh Chi Wei, Lim Hak Tai
– Traditional Chinese school: Wu Tsai Yan, Fan Chang Tien, and See Hiang To
– Chinese calligraphers: Chan Shou She, Pan Shou, Tsue Ta Tee and Goh Teck Sian
– Artists from the British system e.g. Lim Cheng Hoe
