Inwards vs. Outwards

Michelle Ma and Nicole Fabry

Singapore-based artists, Michelle Ma and Nicole Fabry present their first dual solo exhibition entitled Inwards vs. Outwards. The artists came up with the title of the exhibition in a representation of how their artworks complement each other. While Nicole’s art reflects her love for diverse cultures, Michelle’s art pieces are rooted in her Chinese heritage. Drawn to each other’s style of work, this will be the duo’s first joint exhibition.

Exploring themes of Chinese culture, Michelle’s artworks revolve around prominent figures in Chinese history. Her paintings are recognized for the use of bright and contrasting colours on layered portraits. Guided by imagination, she plays with the colours of her palette, culminating in bold and expressive knife strokes. Michelle aims to define her own distinctive link between East and West.

Nicole’s work, on the other hand, is characterized by her experiences and adventures as an expatriate and world traveler. Having lived in four countries across three continents, she has observed and documented different cultures around her. Working from a selection of portraits and pictures, Nicole transports them onto canvas. There is a focus on colour manipulation and temperature of the painting as this helps her to evoke a certain mood – and create a dialogue with the painted subject. Her harmonious color palette highlights the subtlety of expressions found on the faces of her portraits.

The exhibition is supported by The Red Pencil (Singapore) – 10% of exhibition’s sales will be donated to Red Pencil, a non-profit organization helping children, adults, and families through Arts Therapy.
