In 《恋。何》 Love is All Around, Chinese artist Julie Zhu attempts to convey the romance of art-making in manifestly beautiful and lavishly intricate works of art. Combining both drawing in graphite and painting in watercolour, Julie juxtaposes the perfection of the natural world with the acme of human handicraft in Chinese stone carving.
Like butterflies unable to cross the deep blue sea, there will be none with the heart to blame.
Although ostensibly Chinese in outward appearance, Julie’s creations are rather atypical in their combination of media: graphite recreates the powdery grey textures of stone pillars, urns and furniture, or in combination with colour, hardstone carvings of jade and other semi-precious stones; watercolour recalls delicate washes to intense splashes of mineral colour in traditional Chinese painting illuminating birds, insects, fish and lotus leaves, flowers and fruits; gold paint represents highlights or encrustations of lichen on stone.
