Set to premiere at the Drama Centre Theatre, MAD follows a present-day SMU undergraduate whose path unexpectedly crosses with the lesser-known, layered history of the Bras Basah precinct, a site once home to Singapore’s first mental hospital and prison. What unfolds is a playful, time-travelling narrative set to original music by veteran composer Jimmy Ye, directed by George Chan, and based on an original script written by Jo Tan.
The show offers more than just a fresh artistic work. It presents a uniquely Singaporean take on what it means to be labelled “mad”, from societal expectations to personal reinvention. With a cast of students, staff and alumni (yes, including a surprise SMU staffer who sings!), it blurs the lines between past and present, institution and imagination.
