FOST Gallery is pleased to present Make Shift (24 June – 27 August 2017), Phi Phi Oanh’s second solo exhibition in Singapore.
Make Shift reflects on the provisionary and temporal nature of life while we bide time for the construction of something more permanent. It explores the intimate but often sub-conscious relationship with our living spaces, particularly in the changing urban landscape, and the ways we exercise our will over them.
This pictorial installation comprises sculptures and paintings representing common-place articles found at many Vietnamese construction sites such as stacks of bricks, a modest dinner tray for four, a straw mat and patterned floor tiles, ubiquitous in many old Hanoi buildings. These items are painted with natural Vietnamese lacquer (son ta), showcasing the specificity of this medium and its unique visual effects of both translucent depth and polished sheen. The resulting effect is immediately elevating these banal items to objet d’art.
