Masque Sonata is solo exhibition by Singapore’s renowned sculptor Lim Soo Ngee. Soo Ngee sculptures can be seen around Singapore and now, here’s your chance to catch them right here in Room 1 of our gallery.
In Masque Sonata, Soo Ngee expresses his interpretation of Masque, a form of festive courtly entertainment that flourished in 16th and early 17th-century Europe. The exhibition is an extension of his thoughts in the context of current global events and societal developments, for instance universally relatable themes like hypocrisy, political scrambles, the global pandemic catastrophe, actions of the controllers against the controlled, as well as the more personal side of things: relationships, ritual processes, and emotional struggles. Soo Ngee has realised that many put on and change their “masks” to face or confront these various situations in life. This series of works evokes a piece of melody, with its different movements and times, combinations of instruments and tunes.
