Recognised for its delightful French social dining and artisanal retail products, Merci Marcel artistic ethos culminates in its first art exhibition with Taiwanese pop illustrator and designer Billy Ma that will run from 8 May to mid-June 2018.
Espousing the philosophy of supporting the arts since its inception, Merci Marcel has always supported works from local and international artists and craftsmen. It continues its commitment to be an incubator for independent artists as Billy Ma join the roll call of artistic works on current display. Their present showcase includes resident pieces by Singapore-based French artist Gabriel Dufourq, and UK artist Rick Smith’s distinctive tropical mural painting.
Running for a month, Ma’s East-meets-West vibrant pieces will adorn Merci Marcel interior, complementing the vivid citrus palette and mustard mosaic flooring of the quaint bistro space. Diners and art enthusiasts can soak in the vibrant bohemian visuals as they enjoy casual weekend brunches and after-work dinners.
Inspired by spirituality and contemporary social issues, Ma’s illustrations are visually and thematically striking due to his fusion of western pop art aesthetics and eastern character. His Sexy Sin City Series (below) reflect on the dynamic seductive histories of various Singapore enclaves, juxtaposed against images of its decidedly less charismatic and creative modern structures.
