MuMoToMo II honours the lives and legacies of four artists whose practices and personal journeys were deeply interconnected: I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (Murni), Dewa Putu Mokoh, OO Totol, and Edmondo Zanolini. Curated through the lens of Edmondo (Mondo) Zanolini, the collective’s sole surviving member, the exhibition offers an intimate exploration of their intertwined yet singular artistic paths.
The exhibition title, MuMoToMo, is a symbolic abbreviation of the artists’ names—Murni, Mokoh, Totol, and Mondo—emphasising the profound bond they shared. Through Mondo’s perspective as both archivist and storyteller, the exhibition traces the collective journey of these artists, who worked within the confines of their commune, unknowingly creating an artistic legacy that would endure beyond their lifetimes.
Each artist brought distinct yet complementary influences to the collective. Mokoh, disillusioned by the commercialisation of traditional Balinese art, rediscovered his creative purpose through a fateful encounter with Mondo. This meeting catalysed a dynamic exchange that later drew in Murni, a Balinese transmigrant whose bold, visionary style has only recently been recognised on an international scale. The final member, Totol, embraced a true outsider aesthetic, finding his artistic voice and a supportive community within the group despite widespread social marginalisation.
