Nick Taylor’s painting is influenced by the simple forms and flat picture planes of pre-historic cave paintings and indigenous art, and by the wild hedonistic colour palettes of 20th century artists like Matisse and Hockney.
Of the many indigenous artistic traditions of the world, he is particularly drawn to Polynesian, Australian Aboriginal and Huicol traditions. In this exhibition, Nick Taylor is inspired by the mythology of Myrddin (Merlin), agod, magician, trickster, warrior, lunatic and hero. The paintings portray the ancient mythic world of Merlin, as well as his relationship with it as a Cymraeg (fellow of the land).
